🔔 AI Stocks Close — Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 2:15 PM
Closes: SPX 7,675.56 (+0.20%) · NDX 30,553.37 (+0.31%) · DJI 50,970.46 (+0.10%)
Day narrative: Q4 opened with a bond-market staredown — the 10-year punched to 5.34%, its highest since 2002, and stocks buckled early. Then yields backed off to 5.24%, chips caught a bid off Micron's blowout, and all three indexes clawed their way green by the bell.
Sectors: Best Energy (+1.95%) · Worst Health Care (-1.32%)
Movers:
• MU +3.0% — Q4 beat and a raised Q1 outlook; memory pricing is still the cleanest read on AI demand
• AVGO -2.1% — the odd chip out, giving back ground while peers rallied
• CRM +3.1% — bounce off deeply washed-out levels
• IBM +2.6% — enterprise AI rotation found a value-shaped home
• GOOGL -1.7% — heaviest mega-cap drag on the session
• CTSH +7.1% — rode Accenture's results higher
After-hours / Earnings:
• NKE reported a huge headline beat — $0.72 EPS vs. $0.13 expected, revenue $10.97B vs. $10.85B — but $986M of it is a one-time IEEPA tariff recovery after the Supreme Court ruling, worth $0.52 of that EPS and about 900bps of the 49.2% gross margin. Strip it out and revenue still fell 1.1% y/y. Stock closed near $36 just off a 12-year low; the AH tape is sorting signal from windfall.

Macro:
• 10-year Treasury hit 5.34% intraday — a 24-year high — before easing to 5.24%
• Initial jobless claims fell to 197,000, a fourth straight weekly decline
• Manufacturing PMI expanded to 55.9; ISM prices-paid ripped to 77.9%
• Fed Vice Chair Jefferson: inflation "has remained too high," central bank needs more time on rate direction
• KBW Nasdaq Bank Index -0.7%, back to May levels and 13% off August highs
• IPO watch: Anthropic reportedly slipping its Nasdaq listing from October to November to show Q3 numbers, after a $65B Series H at a $965B post-money mark. OpenAI's off the table until 2027, raising at least $30B at roughly $1.4T. Neither trades yet.
Tomorrow: Friday brings the next read on whether the labor market is actually as tight as 197k claims implies, and the bond desk will be the tell again — if 5.34% was the top on the 10-year, equities get room; if it wasn't, today's comeback doesn't hold. Watch semis for follow-through on Micron's guide, and watch whether the Nike tariff-windfall print gets re-rated once analysts separate the one-timer from the turnaround.
