🔔 AI Stocks Close — Tuesday, October 20, 2026 at 2:15 PM
Closes: SPX 7,712.57 (+0.28%) · NDX/Nasdaq Composite 26,424.82 (−0.02%) · DJI 52,495.88 (+1.02%)
Day narrative: A split tape with a clear personality — the Dow ripped 530 points on strong industrial earnings and a 1.8% slide in crude, while the Nasdaq flatlined as megacap tech and AI names gave back a little. Eight of eleven S&P sectors finished green, and the money that left semis went looking for yield-sensitive and defensive homes.
Sectors: Best Health Care (+2%+) · Worst Information Technology / Communication Services (the three red sectors on the board); Real Estate +~2% and Utilities +1%+ rounded out the leadership
Movers:
• EFX +11.1% to $176.16 — Q3 adjusted EPS $2.26, up 11% y/y, with AI-driven margin expansion of 130 bps
• MMM +5%+ — earnings beat plus a full-year guidance raise
• NOC +4%+ — clean Q3 earnings beat in defense
• GM −6.8% to $77.09 — Q3 adjusted EPS of $3.70 topped the $3.63 consensus, but the stock got sold hard anyway on the forward commentary
• ADBE +3.9% to $256.73 — one of the few bright spots in software
• MDB +5.0% to $366.18 — data-infrastructure names caught a bid as AI semis cooled
After-hours / Earnings:
• NFLX reported a beat on the bottom line — EPS $0.87 vs $0.82 — with revenue of $12.87B in line and operating margin expanding to 34.6% from 28.2% a year ago. Shares are down roughly 3–4% AH. The culprit isn't the quarter; it's the 2026 advertising revenue outlook getting trimmed from about $3B to roughly $2.7B. Options were priced for a ~9% move, so this is a muted reaction so far. (Early AH prints — these move fast.)

Macro:
• Crude retreated — WTI settled −1.8% at $101.79, Brent −0.7% at $108.79. That's the single biggest reason the Dow outran the Nasdaq.
• The 10-year is hovering near 5.12%, easing about 2 bps on the session. Still historically elevated, with headline CPI around 3.7% and PPI running hot on energy.
• Policy backdrop stays hawkish: the Fed hiked in September — its first since 2023 — and markets are leaning toward another 25 bps in December.
• AI/IPO watch: Anthropic's quarterly revenue has climbed to roughly $16.8B, and the company said it plans to move 5% of its shares into a new public-benefit fund. OpenAI's 2026 revenue estimate was cut by about $20B, and Sam Altman confirmed a humanoid robot program targeting a 2027 demo. Neither is publicly traded — news flags only.
Tomorrow: Tesla headlines the after-the-bell slate with Q3 — consensus near $0.45 EPS on about $27.9B revenue, with EPS projected down roughly 14% y/y. IBM and SAP also report, both carrying the "deferred deals will close in H2" story that software bulls need validated. Watch whether the enterprise-AI spending narrative holds up, because today's tape showed how fast the rotation out of semis can happen.
