🔔 AI Stocks Close — Friday, October 9, 2026 at 2:15 PM
Closes: SPX 7,811.54 (+0.59%) · NDX 30,883.15 (+0.51%) · DJI 51,654.95 (+0.83%)
Day narrative: Stocks clawed back into the green to cap a genuinely volatile week, with tech rebounding from Thursday's OpenAI-revenue scare and crude backing off its hurricane spike. The catch: a telecom bloodbath and a miserable consumer sentiment print kept this from feeling like a victory lap.
Sectors: Best Real Estate (+1.86%) · Worst Communication Services (-1.51%)
Movers:
• MRNA +9.2% — joined the Nasdaq-100 before the open replacing Warner Bros. Discovery, stacked on top of a cancer-vaccine report
• T / VZ / TMUS -7%+ each — SpaceX's ~$8B spectrum deal lit the legacy carriers on fire; tower names AMT, CCI and SBAC ripped, which is why Real Estate topped the board
• SNOW +7.4% — Agentic Marketplace Discovery hit public preview and the data-platform trade caught fire
• NET +5.6% / CRWD +4.6% — security and edge software bid hard all session
• PLTR +5.2% to a fresh high — Barclays initiated Overweight at $265, Goldman upgraded to Buy at $230
• ORCL +4.6% — bounced back from Thursday's 5%+ drubbing as traders reassessed OpenAI's balance sheet
• AAPL -1.1% — reports of a ~15% cut to iPhone 18 Pro component orders on soft demand
After-hours / Earnings:
• DAL -2.9% — missed for the first time in two years and gutted FY26 guidance to $5.10–$5.60 from $6.50–$7.50 on fuel costs; reported pre-bell, essentially flat into the close
• Quiet post-bell tape otherwise — every watchlist name is sitting within a couple ticks of its 4:00 print

Macro:
• UMich preliminary sentiment fell to 46.3 from 48.1, a five-month low and under the 47.3 consensus — current-conditions sub-index hit an all-time low. Joanne Hsu: cost-of-living frustration "continues to mount."
• Crude eased despite Hurricane Isaias bearing down on Gulf Coast refineries — WTI -0.64% to $90.90, Brent -1.08% to $103.20, helped by Trump's Russian diesel supply announcement
• Yields pushed higher across the curve: 2Y 4.795% (+3.9bp), 10Y 5.248% (+1.5bp). That's the uncomfortable part of today's rally
• IPO watch: Anthropic has confidentially filed a Form S-1 with the SEC and picked Nasdaq, following a $65B Series H at a $965B post-money valuation — a debut could land as soon as November. Broadcom has separately agreed to lend Anthropic up to $42B for infrastructure. OpenAI has ruled out a 2026 listing and is chasing a ~$30B round at roughly $1.4T. Neither trades yet.
Tomorrow: Weekend, then the real test. Earnings season opens Tuesday, October 13 with JPMorgan, Goldman, Citi and Wells Fargo; Bank of America and Morgan Stanley Wednesday. September CPI lands Wednesday, October 14 — headline expected to accelerate to 3.6% from 3.4%, core around 2.5%. ASML reports Wednesday the 14th, TSMC Thursday the 15th. For the watchlist, that chip pair is the whole ballgame.
