🔔 AI Stocks Close — Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at 2:15 PM

Closes: SPX 7,663.72 (-0.25%) · NDX 30,453.47 (+0.23%) · DJI 50,977.58 (-0.66%)
Day narrative: Cooler-than-expected core PCE knocked October hike odds down to roughly 35-40%, but a relentless bid under long-end yields — the 30-year hit its highest since 2002 — kept the cyclical side of the tape pinned. Mega-cap tech and semis absorbed the rotation while financials and industrials wore it, closing the book on a September that cost the Dow 4.9% and handed the Nasdaq a 1.7% gain.

Sectors: Best Utilities (+1.17%, with semis right alongside at SMH +1.15%) · Worst Energy (-0.90%, regional banks KRE -1.02% arguably uglier)

Movers:
• MDB +3.4% — Investor Day laid out MongoDB 9.0, Atlas Infinite and the Atlas Agent Engine; the AI-infrastructure story got a fresh coat of paint
• SOUN +3.1% — small-cap AI names caught the risk bid once the hike odds collapsed
• ADBE +2.9% — best day among the big software names, part of the broad software bounce
• SNOW +2.8% — sell-side notes reasserting Snowflake's seat at the center of enterprise AI plumbing
• META -1.8% — traders chewing on whether OpenAI's newly launched Dots agent threatens the Muse platform; the stock clawed back most of an early 2% hole before fading again
• NET -1.4%, ARM -1.4%, ASML -1.2% — the high-multiple cohort that cares most about a 5.29% ten-year

After-hours / Earnings:
• MU reported a clean beat — adjusted EPS $33.42 vs $31.82 expected on revenue $54.23B vs $51.51B — and guided fiscal Q1 to roughly $61.5B. Shares are only +0.55% AH at $1,071.02 after closing flat at $1,065.11. Options were pricing a ±6.5-7% move, so this is a shrug so far. Management reiterated HBM3E and HBM4 are booked solid through calendar 2027 with demand reaching into 2028.

Macro:
• Core PCE rose 0.2% month-over-month in August versus 0.3% expected; headline PCE at 3.4% year-over-year against a 3.7% consensus. CME FedWatch now puts October hike odds near 35%, down from over 70% a week ago.
• ADP said private payrolls added 90,000 in September, up from 36,000 in August.
• The ten-year yield climbed to 5.29% and the 30-year touched its highest level since 2002 — the single biggest weight on the tape.
• Oil rebounded on geopolitical friction, which took some of the shine off the inflation print.
• AI private-market watch: OpenAI is seeking at least $30 billion at a roughly $1.4 trillion valuation as bridge financing after pushing its IPO past 2026. Anthropic's confidentially filed prospectus points to a listing as soon as November at a potential $2 trillion-plus valuation — and it explicitly warns investors its models could pose catastrophic or existential risks. Neither is publicly traded.

Tomorrow: Q4 opens with a data cluster — initial jobless claims at 7:30 AM MT (201K expected versus 197K prior), continuing claims at 1,730K, then ISM Manufacturing PMI at 8:00 AM MT looking for 54.8 against 54.6 prior, plus S&P Global manufacturing PMI and construction spending. Micron's earnings call commentary on HBM4 pricing will keep working through the semis complex overnight, and the long end of the Treasury curve remains the thing that decides whether tech's bid holds.
