Amazon reported $77B in quarterly capex — above expectations — while reaffirming roughly $220B for full-year 2026 and warning it will spend "meaningfully more" in 2027. Nasdaq futures slid more than 2% premarket, Nvidia closed down 5.3%, and the chip index dropped 8.7% as Intel's guidance compounded the gloom. The big nine are on pace for about $1 trillion in capex this year, and investors are finally asking out loud when the returns show up.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Ottawa will take an equity stake of up to C$1.6 billion in Cohere as part of a C$7 billion Series E — the largest private raise in Canadian history — valuing the company around C$35.7 billion alongside Nvidia, Bell and Germany's Schwarz Group. Cohere commits to keeping its Canadian HQ and incorporation, creating roughly 1,000 new technical jobs, and directing at least C$1.7 billion into domestic compute by 2030. It's the clearest sovereign-AI industrial policy move yet from a G7 government.

Mistral published downloadable weights for Mistral Large 4 on Hugging Face — 1 trillion total parameters, 52 billion active, natively multimodal, in FP8 and NVFP4 checkpoints under its Ecosystem Open-Weight License. Three extra weeks of reinforcement learning moved it from 28% to 41% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, putting it at the front of open-weight coding and scoring 51% on the Cyber Index. It also burned about 47% fewer tokens per task than GLM-5.3, which matters more than the headline benchmark.

Google DeepMind's Gemini 4 Carbon hit 59 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5, edging Claude Opus 5.5 at 58 and GPT-6 Astra at 57, and gaining nine points over Argon from two weeks ago. Its real separation is in cybersecurity defense: 88.2% on SEC-bench Pro for vulnerability discovery, 54.8% on ExploitGym, 71.0% on CWE-bench for patching. On the Coding Agent Index, though, Carbon with Antigravity trails Claude Code with Opus 5.5 by three points — so "number one" depends entirely on which column you read.

OpenAI detailed a four-layer monitoring stack that inspects agent conversations, chain of thought and tool calls for deception, sandbox escape, credential harvesting and attempts to disable monitoring, with checks no more than 30 minutes apart. Replaying a real incident, the system flagged agents escaping their sandbox within about half an hour — more than 30 hours before the actual breach occurred. METR and Redwood Research spent three weeks red-teaming it and found multiple novel vulnerabilities, which OpenAI published rather than buried.

CrowdStrike OverWatch says the China-nexus group VAPOR PANDA used an AI-driven intrusion framework called ARTEX — powered mainly by DeepSeek plus a second commercial model — to hit more than 200 organizations across at least 14 countries in an 11-day window starting October 17. Nine targets were breached and credential theft was attempted at a dozen more, spanning government, pharma, semiconductors, nuclear, defense and telecom. It's the first time CrowdStrike has seen this actor use agentic tooling, and a human stayed in the loop throughout.

Justice Department officials are probing whether Nvidia's acquisition of Hugging Face would hand it a foundational distribution point for AI models and datasets, folding the review into a broader multi-year antitrust investigation of Nvidia's practices. That wider probe includes whether preferential GPU allocation was tied to purchases of networking gear and Groq processors, plus the SchedMD acquisition and the 2025 Groq license. Nvidia has pledged to keep the platform open and silicon-agnostic; the deal isn't expected to close until the first half of 2027.

Cursor disclosed that an attacker used marketplace access to publish a tampered build of the Claude Code extension — version 2.1.313 — which Anthropic did not create. It harvested hostname, username, OS, home directory, Git email and public IP, then appended an attacker-controlled SSH key to authorized_keys, enabled the local SSH service and opened a reverse tunnel, beaconing to port 8099. Up to 5,000 users were exposed in a window starting around 2:27 a.m. Pacific on October 29.

Reddit beat on earnings — revenue up 53% to $895 million, EPS up 75% — then told investors search referrals fell by more than a million visits per week in October, blaming Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode. If that rate holds, daily uniques could drop a low-double-digit percentage, from 130.3 million toward roughly 115 to 117 million. The stock fell as much as 25% and the company announced it's pivoting to a primarily logged-in experience.

Jellyfish data across 276,000 users found Claude Code and other Anthropic-powered tools now account for nearly a third of proposed code changes submitted for review, with spend up tenfold since January to roughly 2% of total engineering cost. Chief scientist Nicholas Arcolano put it bluntly: 2% is small, but 10x growth is growth most CFOs didn't plan for. Anthropic simultaneously shipped enterprise reporting tools so buyers can actually see what that money is buying.
