#1Trump declares "economic D-Day" on Iran

President Trump announced what he called the "most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country," warning that any nation or business throwing Tehran an economic lifeline will face "TREMENDOUS Economic Consequences." Iranian officials fired back, with Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi calling the pivot proof that the military campaign "didn't yield results." No talks are currently scheduled, and Brent crude climbed 2.5% to roughly $94 a barrel.

#2Fed minutes: a rate HIKE is back on the table

Minutes released Wednesday show Federal Reserve officials agreed a rate increase may be necessary if inflation refuses to cool, after the July 29 vote of 9–3 to hold the benchmark rate at 3.5% to 3.75%. Most participants still expect inflation to step down as tariff and energy effects fade, but many flagged the risk it stays stubbornly elevated. Markets now put the odds of a September pause above 65%.

#3Primary bloodbath: incumbents falling at rates not seen since Vietnam

Twelve House members and two senators have now lost renomination bids this cycle — the biggest non-redistricting wipeout in more than fifty years. Florida Rep. Cory Mills became the latest casualty amid ethics and restraining-order controversies, joining Kentucky's Thomas Massie and Texas Rep. Dan Crenshaw on the casualty list. On the Democratic side, DSA-backed challengers have toppled establishment names including Congressional Hispanic Caucus chair Adriano Espaillat.

#4Comer accuses Becerra of burying Fauci's COVID diary

House Oversight Chairman James Comer sent a letter accusing former HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra — now running for governor of California — of failing to hand over Anthony Fauci's private COVID diary despite a 2023 records request covering the terms "COVID-19," "gain-of-function," and "Wuhan." Comer says those words "appear throughout" the diary, which was later found on HHS servers and released. More than a thousand pages are now public.

#5UAE cuts off all trade with Iran

The United Arab Emirates suspended every trade, commercial, and financial transaction with Iran after determining that two missiles fired at its commercial shipping channels came from Iranian territory. The UAE supplied 31% of Iran's imports — about $21 billion in 2024 — making this a severed artery that US sanctions never managed to reach. Tehran denied responsibility and floated a "false flag" theory.

#6Russian missile strike kills ten in Kharkiv region

Russian forces struck a busy intersection in Pechenihy, Kharkiv region, hitting an area with a post office and shops surrounded entirely by residential buildings. At least ten people were killed and many more wounded. President Zelensky posted images of the damage and vowed, "We will definitely respond to this Russian strike," days after Ukraine launched a 600-plus drone blitz into Russia.

#7China touts Arctic "Ice Silk Road" to bypass Hormuz

Chinese carrier Sea Legend Line says it will run eight consecutive China-to-Europe voyages through Russia's Northern Sea Route this Arctic season, with the first container ship departing Ningbo. Beijing is pitching the route as a way around the chokepoints strangling Middle East shipping, and bookings have outrun expectations. European officials are uneasy about depending on a lane that Vladimir Putin effectively controls.

#8mRNA cancer vaccine clears late-stage trial

Moderna and Merck announced Wednesday that their mRNA cancer vaccine prevented skin cancer from returning in a phase 3 clinical trial. Participants who had tumors surgically removed saw both recurrence and spread reduced. The companies say they plan to file for regulatory approval.

#9Byzantine shipwreck yields gold after 1,300 years

The Croatian Conservation Institute has presented findings from a wreck off the island of Mljet dating to the late seventh or early eighth century, recovering gold coins, jeweled buckles, a golden signet ring, and jewelry set with rubies, emeralds, and pearls. The haul suggests a powerful Byzantine figure was aboard. Stanford archaeologist Justin Leidwanger called it "the most important shipwreck of its period."

#10Maryland's rabid beaver problem

Wildlife officials are hunting a beaver that bit a 10-year-old girl swimming with a camp group at Seneca Creek State Park, the state's third beaver attack in under three weeks. The girl took three lacerations to her upper leg before counselors pulled the animal off her. Two beavers from earlier attacks at Cunningham Falls State Park were caught, euthanized, and tested positive for rabies.
