#1Hurricane Isaias slams Florida Panhandle as a Category 2

The Atlantic's first hurricane of 2026 came ashore near Destin around 9:30 p.m. ET Friday with 105 mph sustained winds, and gusts hit 96 mph at Pensacola Bay. More than 365,000 customers across Florida and Alabama lost power, Destin and Fort Walton Beach were under a flash flood emergency, and forecasters warned of storm surge up to nine feet. Rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are projected inland, with isolated pockets near 15 inches.

#2Trump announces Russian diesel deal to crack fuel prices

After a phone call with Vladimir Putin, President Trump said Friday that Russia will immediately ship over 300,000 tons of diesel to the American and global market, another 500,000 tons in November, and a million tons after that. The announcement lands with diesel averaging $6.28 a gallon and gasoline at $4.37, per AAA, and with Isaias knocking roughly 1.3 million barrels of daily Gulf production offline. Trump credited "total control" of the Strait of Hormuz plus the Russia deal for prices he says will fall fast.

#3Trump rallies Syracuse for Blakeman with Mike Tyson in tow

Twenty-four days out from the November 3 midterms, Trump flew Mike Tyson up on Air Force One and brought him onstage at a Syracuse rally for Bruce Blakeman, the Republican trying to unseat Governor Kathy Hochul. Trump touted a record drop in violent crime and lower prescription drug prices, and joked that Tyson was Blakeman's personal security. Democrats currently lead the generic ballot and hold edges in several Senate battlegrounds, including North Carolina and Georgia.

#4Trump takes Russiagate suit against Clinton to the Supreme Court

Trump is petitioning the Supreme Court to revive his 2022 lawsuit against Hillary Clinton, the DNC, and officials tied to the Russia collusion narrative. A federal judge in Florida tossed the case as lacking substance, and the Eleventh Circuit upheld that in 2025, calling the claims untimely and meritless. At least four justices would have to vote to take the writ for the appeal to be heard at all.

#5Houthi missiles hit Riyadh airport, three dead

Iran-backed Houthis claimed a ballistic missile strike on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, killing three including Saudia pilot Captain Hamoud Ali Alkalthami, in the second attack on the airport in two days. Trump said Friday the US "will not be attacking Iran" before the November midterms, calling Iran militarily in "very bad condition." At least eleven ships have been struck in the Strait of Hormuz or off Oman this month, and US Central Command says it has now redirected 133 commercial vessels under its blockade.

#6Nobel Peace Prize to Navi Pillay sparks international backlash

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2026 Peace Prize to 85-year-old South African jurist Navi Pillay, former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, for her work on war crimes accountability. Pillay chaired the UN commission of inquiry that accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, and Prime Minister Netanyahu led a wave of condemnation, joined by Jewish advocacy groups and UN Watch alleging anti-Israel bias. The committee defended the pick as honoring courage and integrity in defense of the rule of law.

#7Flávio Bolsonaro leads Lula heading into Brazil's October 25 runoff

The first post-first-round polls show Senator Flávio Bolsonaro ahead of President Lula da Silva, with Datafolha putting him up 49 to 45 and PoderData showing a six-point lead on valid votes. Bolsonaro had already defied polling to win the October 4 first round, 47.03 percent to 45.16, just shy of the majority needed to avoid a runoff. His Liberal Party also took 121 of 513 congressional seats in the right's best showing in four decades.

#8FBI arrests Canadian suspect in ShinyHunters breach of its own jobs portal

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of another alleged ShinyHunters co-conspirator tied to the September hack of FBIJobs.gov, with the newest suspect reported to be a Canadian citizen. The group claimed it stole personal data, including Social Security numbers and home addresses, belonging to nearly all FBI agents and applicants. Earlier arrests include a 24-year-old in Amsterdam and a suspect detained in Jordan who is reportedly cooperating with investigators.

#9Nobel physics goes to the man who hunted ghost particles under Antarctic ice

Belgian-born physicist Francis Halzen won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physics for building the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and detecting high-energy neutrinos from deep space. IceCube uses thousands of sensors buried in Antarctic ice to catch particles that pass through almost everything else untouched. Halzen noted the Milky Way only emerged convincingly from IceCube's data after researchers applied neural networks to the signal.

#10More than 3,500 Brazilians voted for "Six Seven" for president

Brazil's electoral records show over 3,500 voters punched in a nonexistent candidate riffing on the "six seven" internet meme during the October 4 presidential election. Brazil's electronic ballots require a numeric candidate code, which makes joke protest votes trivially easy and trivially countable. All of them were tallied as invalid, which is a very expensive way to tell a joke.
