## Trending Slop Formats

**Made-for-Advertising (MFA) Slideshow Hell**
The current apex predator of slop. The AutoBait network — 200+ domains exposed by DoubleVerify on March 4 — mass-generates clickbait articles for approximately **$2.25 each**, then wraps them in up to **56 slideshow slides** with **8 ad banners per slide** that auto-refresh every few seconds. The JavaScript powering the operation literally instructed the AI to produce images of women over 30 showing "fatigue, frustration, sadness" and write copy that lands "like a gut punch." Your rage is a line item in their spreadsheet. **Amazon Book Flooding**
Pittsburgh author John Miller spent **three years** writing a Simon & Schuster biography of baseball manager Earl Weaver. Within months of publication, **nine AI-generated knockoff books** about Weaver appeared on Amazon — one before his own book shipped. He now ranks **third** in his own search results, behind a prolific AI author credited with ~375 titles spanning bourbon, nuclear reactors, true crime, and college sports. Amazon's response: a cap of **3 new books per day per account**, easily circumvented with multiple accounts. ([WESA](https://www.wesa.fm/arts-culture/2026-03-09/pittsburgh-author-ai-generated-books), [Authors Guild](https://authorsguild.org/news/ai-driving-new-surge-of-sham-books-on-amazon/))

**AI "Educational" Children's Video**
A March 2026 NYT investigation found roughly **40% of videos recommended to children** on YouTube and YouTube Kids appear to be AI slop — nonsensical content falsely labeled educational, featuring imagery like oddly-proportioned horses hatching from eggs. The algorithm loves this stuff. Children cannot opt out of it.

**Fake Research Papers**
AI slop has reached academia. Preprint repositories and CS conference organizers are being flooded with AI-generated fake research paper submissions. Researcher Raphael Wimmer documented how trivially easy it is to manufacture convincing fake papers at scale. ([Nature](https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-03967-9))

**News Event SEO Farming**
When the Epstein documents dropped (Jan–Feb 2026), content farms generated **hundreds of fake "exclusive" listicles within minutes**, inventing celebrity connections. When a government "Warrior Dividend" was announced, **160 content farm articles** targeting the narrative appeared within **seven days**. The slop news cycle is faster than actual journalism. ([Bolster AI](https://bolster.ai/blog/gov-seo-content-farms), [PBS NewsHour](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/classroom/daily-news-lessons/2026/01/what-to-know-about-ai-generated-content-spiking-amid-news-events))

## Platform Watch

| Platform | Situation |
|---|---|
| **Facebook** | AI slop has "grown so dark" users aren't prepared — celebrity deepfakes, fabricated events, scam ads. Users 55+ (24% of the base) are the primary targets. ([Futurism](https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/facebook-ai-slop-dark)) |
| **Instagram** | User frustration fueling documented "exodus threat." Slop has overtaken organic posts in many feeds. ([WebProNews](https://www.webpronews.com/instagrams-ai-slop-crisis-user-frustration-fuels-exodus-threat-by-2026/)) |
| **YouTube** | CEO Neal Mohan named AI slop a **top platform priority for 2026** in his January annual letter. Kids' content is the bleeding wound. ([CNBC](https://www.cnbc.com/2026/01/21/youtube-chief-says-managing-ai-slop-is-a-priority-for-2026-.html), [Bloomberg](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-01-21/youtube-ceo-says-battling-ai-slop-a-top-priority-in-2026)) |
| **Amazon KDP** | Effectively an unmoderated AI slop publish-button. The economics are brutal: $20/month ChatGPT Plus, free publishing, print-on-demand, and Kindle Unlimited pays by the page-read. |
| **Google Search** | **3,000+ AI content farm sites detected**, growing by 300–500/month. Google just fired its March 2026 spam update today. ([Search Engine Land](https://searchengineland.com/google-releases-march-2026-spam-update-472411)) |
| **Academic Preprints** | Emerging slop frontier. Conference submission systems are not built for this volume. |

**By the numbers:** 51%+ of all spam is now AI-generated. 15% of all ad spend reaches MFA slop sites (ANA estimate). The number of AI content farms is doubling year-over-year.

## Notable Incidents

**TODAY — OpenAI Pulls the Plug on Sora App (March 24, 2026)**
OpenAI has shut down the Sora social video app — the platform that went viral in autumn 2025 for AI-generated short videos — after sustained alarms from Hollywood, academics, and advocacy groups over nonconsensual deepfakes and the volume of realistic fabricated content it enabled. A social video platform built on a video generation model turns out to generate... a lot of generated video. Shocking. ([AP/US News](https://www.usnews.com/news/best-states/california/articles/2026-03-24/openai-pulls-the-plug-on-sora-the-viral-ai-video-app-that-sparked-deepfake-concerns))

**The AutoBait Exposure (March 4)**
DoubleVerify's Fraud Lab caught and documented the AutoBait network in operational detail — including the actual prompts instructing the AI to target emotional manipulation and manufacture the appearance of authenticity. This followed their May 2025 takedown of "Synthetic Echo," another 200+ site network. These things regenerate like slime mold.

**Super Bowl LX — Svedka's Robot Party**
Vodka brand Svedka aired a fully AI-generated Super Bowl commercial featuring robots drinking and dancing. The internet responded with the contempt it deserved.

**2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony**
An AI-generated scene featuring actress Sabrina Impacciatore was widely condemned for displacing human animators — and for depicting the Olympic rings in a way that violated brand guidelines. Both the art and the branding were wrong simultaneously. A genuine achievement.

**Activision's Fake Game Ads**
Activision ran AI-generated Facebook and Instagram ads for **games that don't exist** — "Guitar Hero Mobile," "Crash Bandicoot: Brawl," and "Call of Duty: Zombie Defender." Not satire. Actual marketing.

## The Grift Corner

The slop-industrial complex is self-documenting its own playbook:

- **Flux 1.1 Pro** is the image generator of choice for AutoBait-style networks — chosen specifically because outputs "NOT look artificial, stylized, or generated by AI."
- **Hundreds of websites** now offer step-by-step guides to launching AI book-generation operations on Amazon KDP, per Carnegie Mellon's Param Singh.
- A single MFA slop website can generate **~$40,000/month** in programmatic ad revenue. The ROI math is not subtle.
- The standard pitch deck sells "passive income" from AI content portfolios — buy access to a content farm template, spin up 10–20 domains, watch the AdSense roll in.

A peer-reviewed University of Florida study (March 2026) confirmed what everyone already suspected: AI slop congests recommendation algorithms and actively buries quality content, harming both consumers and professional creators. UF marketing professor Tianxin Zou: *"Now there is a flood of relatively low-quality content. Because the quantity is so large, it congests the recommendation systems."* ([UF News](https://news.ufl.edu/2026/03/ai-slop/))

## Silver Lining

**Kagi SlopStop** — launched November 12, 2025 — lets all Kagi Search users flag low-quality AI content directly in results. Flagged domains get downranked and labeled. Kagi is explicitly building what it calls "the largest dataset of AI-slop domains on the web" through community reports combined with automated detection. ([Kagi Blog](https://blog.kagi.com/slopstop))

**DoubleVerify's AI SlopStopper** is protecting ad-buy clients from MFA networks and is scheduled to expand to social platforms during 2026. ([HUMAN Security](https://www.humansecurity.com/learn/blog/cutting-through-the-noise-of-ai-slopin-2026/))

**Google's March 2026 spam update** went live today — the first spam update of the year, targeting slop networks globally via its SpamBrain AI. No specifics disclosed, which is standard Google policy, but the timing is notable. ([Search Engine Land](https://searchengineland.com/google-releases-march-2026-spam-update-472411))

**Meta** is secretly developing an AI detection tool, discovered via internal feature flags in the app's code. Not live yet, but someone at Meta is apparently aware they're drowning in the stuff they helped create. ([Digital Trends](https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/meta-is-secretly-working-on-an-ai-detection-tool-after-unleashing-ai-slop-avalanche/))

**Théodore Cazals**, a 20-year-old Paris student, built "Insane AI Slop" on X as a public documentation project — crowdsourcing the receipts. The vibes of the resistance are: extremely online and extremely done with it.

And finally: the **American Dialect Society**, **Merriam-Webster**, and the **Macquarie Dictionary** all named "slop" their Word of the Year for 2025. When the dictionaries are keeping score, the culture has officially noticed.
