Independent evaluator METR spent eleven weeks inside Anthropic's research data and concluded the company's rate of model improvement as of October is about twice its March 2024–October 2025 baseline, with roughly 80% of the speedup attributable to AI-assisted research rather than more training compute. METR says Anthropic redacted "a majority of the evidence we found most informative," including per-stage acceleration estimates, bottleneck analysis, and forecasts for future models. Anthropic defended the cuts on competitive grounds; METR separately suggests Anthropic may have crossed its own acceleration warning threshold back in July.

Three major investors told the FT that Anthropic's planned Nasdaq listing under ticker ANT can't price at $1.5 trillion after this week's AI rout, with talk now clustering around $1.2–1.3 trillion and one voice saying closer to $1 trillion. Early October chatter had the number as high as $2 trillion. The raise may shrink from $100 billion to roughly $80 billion, and at least one investor floated delaying the offering — currently targeted for the week before Thanksgiving — until markets settle.

OpenAI completed the first tranche of a new private round — $11 billion from backers including SoftBank and MGX — valuing it at $1.25 trillion, with the round possibly growing to $20 billion in the coming weeks. That's well short of the $30 billion at $1.4 trillion the company originally sought before public-market AI sentiment turned. It still marks a steep climb from the $852 billion mark set in March, and OpenAI continues to sit out the IPO window Anthropic is trying to squeeze through.

DeepMind, working with human cryptanalysts, says AI agents produced two genuine cryptographic advances in a matter of weeks: a new algorithm that beats the prior best signature-forgery attack on 1024-bit RSA by roughly 1,600x, and a batch-factoring improvement cutting the marginal cost per additional key by about 30x. VP of Science Pushmeet Kohli announced the work Friday. Modern 2048-bit-and-up deployments are unaffected — but the result is a loud proof point that agents can now do novel frontier mathematics.

OpenAI released GPT-6 Cyber, an Astra-derived model tuned to find and validate exploitable vulnerabilities while staying inside user-defined rules of engagement. Researchers reproduced 1,724 Linux kernel vulnerabilities and built working exploits for 948, and handed Mozilla proof-of-concepts for 81 bugs Mozilla rates high severity. It scores 48.5% on ExploitGym versus 32.1% for GPT-5.6 Cyber, stays in scope 99.93% of the time, and ships only to vetted Daybreak Red customers with IP allowlisting and misalignment monitoring — at a higher API price than comparable Anthropic and Google offerings.

Thursday's rout wiped roughly $2.3–3 trillion off tech market value as the PHLX Semiconductor Index fell 12%, Nvidia dropped 9.3% (over $400 billion gone) and AMD fell 17%, triggered by Democratic congressional wins and voter approval of ballot measures curbing data-center buildout. Friday brought a partial recovery — the chip index up 4%, Nvidia up 6%, AMD up 8% — but the week still closed bruised. CNBC reports the buildout has become a "war of attrition," with the International Data Center Authority counting 46 projects worth $170 billion blocked or delayed across 20 states.

Physical Superintelligence, a public benefit corporation, says its research system — running a non-public Anthropic model — found a proof of the Aaronson–Ambainis conjecture on the third day of a run, and that the proof was machine-verified in Lean. The 2008 conjecture concerns when quantum computers can achieve exponential speedups over classical ones. Caveats matter: the paper isn't peer reviewed and neither Scott Aaronson nor Andris Ambainis has publicly weighed in yet.

Mira Murati's lab is closing a roughly $5 billion round led by Accel at a $40 billion pre-money valuation, more than triple last year's $12 billion mark, with Nvidia separately in talks to put in about $2.5 billion. Alongside the raise came Inkling 2 Small: a 594B-parameter mixture-of-experts model with 17B active parameters, 1M-token context, image input and variable reasoning effort, scoring ~31 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index. It's live on Tinker with closed weights now, with Apache 2.0 weights promised after red-teaming wraps.

Check Point Research got inside operator consoles for ARTEX, a Chinese open-source agentic pentest framework now widely adopted by criminals, and found attacks running essentially on autopilot after initial goal-setting. Agents stole over 190,000 gaming credentials and more than 300 Apple code-signing certificates — validating them against Apple revocation status on their own — plus RCE, exposed databases and cloud credentials, and in one case independently executed a supply-chain compromise. Estimated operator cost: roughly $700 to $1,500 in tokens. Separately, Censys found 800-plus unprotected ARTEX deployments exposed on the open internet.

Ramp's corporate card data shows enterprise AI token spend grew just 1.5% across August and September combined, down from 42% in July, with an October reacceleration to 8.9% that's still a fraction of the summer pace. Token volume climbed 37.1% over the same window — consumption is outrunning dollars, thanks to OpenAI and Anthropic price cuts plus buyers getting sharper at cost control. Ramp lead economist Ara Kharazian put it bluntly: "a lot of the assumptions that we had about the trajectory of AI spend are starting to break down." The Bank of England separately found AI lifted UK productivity only about 0.5% over three years.
